Investigation on Different Compositions of Clay and Water to the Permeability of the Silica Sand Used in Greensand Casting Mould

Greensand casting is a process that uses mixture of silica sand with addition control additions which are bentonite clay and the presence water. Control influence mechanical properties greensand mould, for this study focuses on permeability. Bentonite acts as binder activated by water to develop strength plasticity thus mould can be formed. Permeability ability gas pass through moulding aggregates in order reduce defects due trapped gasses cavity such blow holes or pin holes. The objective investigate effect (water clay) permeability number sample (tailing sand) from former tin mine site Tronoh, Perak. Experiments conducted according American Foundrymen Society (AFS) standard procedures. Sand sieved using sieve shaker size 425 µm. Cylindrical test pieces dimensioning Ø50 mm×50 mm height various mixtures sand-clay–water ratios compacted applying three ramming blows 6666 grams Ridsdale-Dietert metric rammer. tested meter. results show have affected when more added, into mixture, found decreased. appropriate allowable content crucial mould.
